| Minnesota to pay for slew of penalties
Associated Press
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Minnesota Wild were fined $25,000 by the NHL on Tuesday for their part in a brawl at the end of Game 2 of their playoff series against the Vancouver Canucks.
But Wild defenseman Willie Mitchell wasn't suspended despite returning to the ice after being sent off for roughing. Mitchell was assessed a game misconduct at the 20-minute mark of the 3-2 Minnesota victory that evened the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal series at one game apiece.
Wild general manager Doug Risebrough said he viewed the league's decision as a warning.
"Emotions were high for both teams, which is why the teams collected on the ice, and the league doesn't want that," he said.
Five players were given misconducts at the end of the game.
Tempers flared in the third period as the Canucks tried to rally. Trailing by a goal, Trent Klatt almost tied it on a scramble with 54.7 seconds left, but Mitchell closed his hand on the puck in the crease. The infraction, which should have resulted in a penalty shot, went undetected, which enraged the Canucks.
The players continued jawing after the final buzzer, and punches were thrown.
No fines were assessed against the Canucks, and Vancouver forward Brad May said the team wasn't concerned about the problems at the end of Game 2 carrying over into Tuesday night's play.
Seven seconds into Tuesday night's game, May fought Minnesota forward Matt Johnson.
Damn Minnesota. |

| matt johnson... where do i remember that name??? oh yeah... Quote:
Los Angeles Kings' left wing Matt Johnson has been suspended for twelve
games as a result of him sucker-punching New York Rangers' defenseman Jeff Beukeboom in the back of the head during last Thursday's game at the Great Western Forum.
Johnson, who said he was retaliating for Beukeboom's alleged
"slew-footing" of Kings' winger Glen Murray, was hit with a match
penalty during the game. He will lose $95,121.96 in salary as a result
of the suspension.
"A punch from behind by Mr. Johnson resulted in a head injury to Mr.
Beukeboom and the league has made clear that deliberate blows to the
head--particularly those which cause injury to the head of an
opponent--will be treated severely," said Colin Campbell, NHL Senior
Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations.
| the wild should be very happy with their successes this year, but they're no match for the canucks. |
