Default Jupiler League 2006-2007 (Belgian Competition)

La Belgique starts again.

Germany had a scandal, ofcourse Italy had (has) one and Belgium had some problems last season as well. This all thanks to a Chinese business man, named Yen, who has a Chinese Football Syndicate. However, there weren't many big punishments thrown around, so 18 clubs are taking part in the Belgian Jupiler League 2006-2007!

As every season Club Brugge & Anderlecht are favorites. Standard had a fantastic season and definitely have chances to compete again in the top. But they did lose Tchite to Anderlecht. Plus, Anderlecht also signed Mbark Boussoufa, the most talented player in Belgum last season. He played for AA Gent and was superb.

Steven Defour, besides Boussoufa extremely talented as well, has also a new club. Both Ajax & Feyenoord were interested, but Standard is the lucky one to offer him a contract.

AA Gent, Genk & Westerlo are my personal favorites to go for UEFA Cup Football. And what can Zulte-Waregem do in their 2nd season on the highest Belgium level and playing UEFA Cup?! Mons are back on the highest level, but together with Lierse they're the candidates to relegate.

Last Saturday the 1st important match of the season was being played. At least, due to be played. The Belgian Supercup (Anderlecht – Zulte-Waregem) didn’t hit the 90 minutes, because of the extreme rainfall. I was watching the match live on Belgian television and I could barely see the players!

Friday 28th July
Club Brugge – Gent

Saturday 29th July
Genk – Zulte-Waregem
GBA – Beveren
Mouscron – Cercle Brugge
Charleroi – Lierse
Brussels – Mons

Sunday 30th July
Lokeren – Standard
St-Truiden – Anderlecht
Westerlo – Roeselare

The season could not have a better opening with Club Brugge – Gent, #3 vs #4 of last season! Lokeren – Standard and Westerlo – Roeselare aren’t bad matches either.

I was totally shocked by that result. I expected a close win for Brugge, but this was a very convincing one. The 3rd place from last season was poor, they NEED that CL ticket. Whatever happens this weekend, Brugge will probably be on top.

Both GBA & Genk were lucky to win last night.

All matches that will be played this evening are interesting. Standard and Anderlecht will have to win as their goal is the big title. Westerlo vs Roeselare could be a good clash between two mid-table teams.

Standard have signed the big talent Dufour, but it seems with Tchite gone that they have a negative balance. One match, one loss.

Anderlecht's match was an awesome one. After 15 minutes of play, Van Damme (Anderlecht) was sent off with a red card. During the first half, Anderlecht helt on and when the 2nd half started, Anderlecht scored 0-1. With 10 men!

Later on in the match St-Truiden made 1-1 and 2-1 and Anderlecht were almost falling off the bridge. Until a St-Truiden player scored an own goal. Out of the hope that was given back by the opponent, Tchite was able to score twice in the last part of the match and so he's topscorer of Belgium. With 2 goals!

It was an exciting first weekend, but I already have written Standard off as a title candidate. Club & Anderlecht are very strong and maybe Anderlecht could even produce some good results in Europe.
