That's actually what happened.

They've been replaying the incident on Sky Sports News lots of times and there's a lot of discussion about bringing in goalline technology to help the referee and linesmen in situations like that. The shot on goal was from almost at the half-way line, that's why the referee and linesman were so far away at the time. The ball looped high up into the air and Carroll fumbled his catch, it bounced off him and into the goal, but Carroll spooned it out very quickly.
Apart from that (and Ronaldo's performance) United had a great match. Scholes and Keane were on top form again, as was Giggs until his injury. Fletcher has been playing well too, we were just very unlucky in front of goal .. as were Tottenham!
