Some of the Arsenal fans at the BBC site..

Great win, great win, great win! Not a great match, but a great wins in terms of kick-starting our season and in terms of the resulting psychological effect this may have. The only thing I don't like, is that Arsenal have to play Southampton at home next weekend - can't see them losing it.

Afterwards:

Crystal Palace (a)
Tottenham (a)
West Brom (h)
Liverpool (a)
Birmingham (h)
Chelsea (h)

Bad run possible.

Bad run possible.
Palace (a): They'll hammer them.
Spurs (a) Draw possibly.
Baggies (h) Comfortable home win
Scousers (a) Brilliant recent record at Anfield. But in this case I'll say draw.
Brum: (h) Home win.
Chelski (h) Draw would do.

Arsenal wont get into a bad run as much as I wish it. Looks like its turning ugly though with an alleged incident with Sir Alex and some soup and food and an Arsenal player... Ruud could get charged by the FA also.

This is the way I see it. The match against Southampton will most likely result in a thrashing for The Saints due to an Arsenal backlash after having their run ended. Southampton are in poor form and are not a team I can see getting the better of Arsenal anymore, like they could a few seasons ago.

However:

Crystal Palace (a) - Palace are steadily improving and could be hard to play away from home, especially as Arsenal will have had a midweek clash with Panathiniakos.

Tottenham (a) - Spurs are an improved team this season, despite what their last two results suggest. They do seem to lack an inibility to score many goals, but are solid at the back. I wouldn't be surprised at a draw.

West Brom (h) - West Brom will probably get beaten, but I believe they are capable of getting a draw with the right tactics.

Liverpool (a) - If Liverpool play to the best standards they have been showing this season, they could beat Arsenal with great attacking football.

Birmingham (h) - Arsenal again should win, but I believe Birmingham are another team capable of fustrating them.

Chelsea (h) - Could go either way. The timing of the match is massive as it comes after the last CL group matches, which could be good or bad for Arsenal.

Manchester United v Arsenal - Player Ratings

Story by Mike Bohndiek 25 October 2004

Normally I would just write about key incidents and then player ratings, but I feel I should add a few words to this one, and maybe do a rating for Mike Riley (although there will never be enough zeros).

He completely changed the game by awarding that penalty, which of course, was never a penalty. The game seemed to be heading for a nil-nil, with all the play in the middle of the park. Once Man U took the lead we were never going to get back into it as they put 10 behind the ball.

Whatever happens, all our players are heroes for what they have done. 49 games unbeaten is an amazing record. It was a nice touch to have the away section singing "We’re proud of you" as the players left the field.

Its time to start a new run!

Key Incidents (Ill keep this brief!)

Red card - Not issued! - With Freddie clear on goal, Rio came clean across him and made sure he took him out. Mike Riley bottled it and didn’t make any decision.

Goal (Man U) (75) - My word what a shocking decision. Till my dying day I will not forget the image of Mike Riley pointing to the spot, as he does so often at OT. Rooney ran into the box and with no contact, took a blatant dive. Some would argue that Sol had his leg out, but in truth, he pulled it away long before Rooney even looked like going down. A penalty was awarded and the Horse dispatched it.

Goal (Man U) (90) - With Arsenal up field looking for the equaliser, Man U countered which ended up with Smith sending a low ball in from the right straight onto Rooney’s foot, who couldn’t miss.

Player Ratings

Jens Lehmann - 7 - Performed well and could do nothing about the two goals. Made some decent stops up to that point.

Ashley Cole - 9 - MOTM. Was subject to a horror tackle from Ruud early on, but still got up to give 100% to the team. Arsenal through and through.

Kolo Toure - 7 - Stayed focused on his task and was not found wanting on any occasion. Showed good common sense late on the just keep shooting, as anything can happen (Baros v Fulham)

Sol Campbell - 8 - Strong as usual. Had a shocker of a decision given against him. Did well to keep his cool when he was clearly upset by it.

Lauren - 7 - Put in some fantastic challenges to keep Giggs very quiet. Also blocked nearly everything that came at him. One of his better performances.

Jose Reyes - 7 - How many borderline tackles on him? I lost count within the first twenty minutes! Credit to the man, he always got back up and showed the mancs that no matter how hard they tried, he would not be beaten.

Patrick Vieira - 7 - A much better performance than in previous games. Stuck his foot in, and in the absence of Keane, found running the midfield easy.

Edu - 6 - Lost the ball too easily, and his distribution was poor. Not looking like the same Edu we saw towards the end of last season.

Freddie Ljungberg - 8 - Never stopped running. Another cool and calm display. Showed some neat tricks to beat Heinze.

Thierry Henry - 5 - I don’t like criticising players after a defeat, but Thierry was non-existent. He seemed unable to shoot and when in promising positions himself, chose to set up others who were in harder situations. An off day to say the least.

Dennis Bergkamp - 7 - Played some neat balls through the defence. Perhaps he should have shot first time when put though on goal, but otherwise had a good game.

Subs:

Robert Pires - 6 - Had little time to change the game, and had only a few touches.

I wonder, do any Arsenal fans (apart from Chris) actually remember Ronaldo being blatantly fouled after the first penalty incident!? That should have been a penalty, most likely would have gone in and United would have won anyway. They need to get over it and stop complaining. If they really believe their team performed well, then there will be no problem beating Southampton next weekend.

They're proud of Pires diving against Portsmouth last season (and many other incidents), but yet can't take it when it happens to them!? There's a word for that - hypocrites.

I think possibly the first one was too harsh and shouldnt have been given but from the angle Riley had, I can see why he gave it. The second one was a penalty for sure. Pires is a known diver. He did a similar one when playing for France v Rep of Ireland.

Yeah, the two incidents even each other out, yet the media and Arsenal fans have a hard time grasping it.. Oh well. I think Ronaldo's may have not been given because he does have a reputation for going down easily at times. So Riley probably thought it wasn't a penalty.

I saw that one, good thing France didn't get anything out of the dive.

I'll be fair now.. even if that didnt go in manu would still had won 1-0.... if the game turned out as it did even if they hadnt scored at a penalty..
so we just have to admit that manu was better then us this time!.

The refs should pay more attantion to the players so they can see if they dive or not..
