Default Classic Sport Moments

I just thought that i would great if we could have a thread where we can relive the greating sporting moments from yester-year, moments that we will not quickly forget, and moments we will recall 20 years down the line.

This thread has great potential, and can become an informative discussion, if it proves successful.

To kick of the discussion and since we are in the season of a major football event, a moment that i will NEVER forget in football is that of the:

EVENT: 1994 World Cup Final
DATE: 17th July:
LOCATION: Los Angeles, USA
RESULT: Brazil -- Italy (0-0 aet) (3-2 on penalties)

Brazil looked the likely winners in the final, and were the better team, but a resilient italian fight, kep them going, first through normal time then the additional extra time, and finally Roberto Baggio missed his penalty in the shoot-out after a goalless draw, and the fans could start celebrating Brazil's first World Cup triumph in nearly a quarter of a century.

Italy had struggled throughout the tournament and their place in the final was a great reward in itself. Roberto Baggio saved the team in every game during the knock-out stage making up for his disappointing groupstage performances. The even lostst to Ireland in the first match, and the final standings to their group saw all teams end on same points and goal difference. Norway eliminated on least goals scored.

That was a successful world cup tournament, and ITALY gained many fans by virtue of the tragic circumstances of their elimination.

September 8, 1998
Cardinals vs. Cubs
Busch Stadium-- St. Louis, Missouri

McGwire passes Maris with 62nd

For nearly the entire summer, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa were neck and neck, each chasing the most coveted individual record in all of baseball, 61 home runs in one season. In 1961, Roger Maris hit 61. In 1997, McGwire fell a few short of the mark and was met with high expectations entering the 1998 season.

Nobody expected Sosa to be part of the race. But due to a strong effort in the month of June, he put himself right on the path with McGwire.

On September 8, the two men were in the same park playing against eachother. The Cardinals and the Cubs, the greatest rivalry in the National League, now had a monumental story to it. With McGwire tied with Maris, Sosa in the upper 50s with his home run total, tens of thousands of fans in attendance, millions of people watching the game on television, and Roger Maris's children in the stands, Mark McGwire stepped to the plate. At exactly 8:18 pm, he took Cubs pitcher Steve Trachsel deep to left field with a line drive shot that only barely cleared the wall. Pandemonium erupted in Busch.

I will never forget where I was, where I was sitting, what I was eating, who I was with and how I felt at that very moment. Watching Mark McGwire miss first base out of sheer excitement, having to go back and touch it, running around giving high fives to the Cubs players, greeting his son at home plate, and then hugging his friend Sammy Sosa before going to pay his respects to the Maris family is a moment I will NEVER forget.

Without a shadow of a doubt when Man Utd beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in the Champions League final in 1999. Fantastic. I remember that and will never forget that night.

that was a great write-up NDD, i obviously did not watch it, but i am sure it must've been something amazing - what is McGwire up to now??

Emma, that was truly a spectacular night - it was supposed to be all over, but then the giant comeback. i remember it clearly. i was watching all alone at home - everyone else was asleep - i was over the moon, but could not scream or shout or do anything!

I was watching it in the pub with my Dad and it was amazing. I also remember clearly when Ireland beat Romania on penalties in the World cup and of course when we lost to Spain on penalties in the last world cup.

johnsen and berg isnt on the national team any more.

in 1998 when drillo was the maneger they were 7th on the world fifa ranking after semb took over it was just down hill.

though semb took over in 99 and he had is ups until 2000 after the game against spain
