| [BISSCHOFF]Wowowowow, wait wait stop, time out, hold the phone, HOLD THE PHONE,[/BISSCHOFF]
Before we start being all happy and stuff, let's not yet draw our conclusions here. He never signed anything, first we start reading: Goldberg has settled his AOL Time Warner contract and declared himself a free agent. The question is, will the former WCW World Champion sign with the WWF? Goldberg's future is certain to become pro-wrestling's hottest topic.
Goldberg is clearly wrestling's hottest free agent now and things could get extremely interesting over the next month or so regarding where he ends up. The WWF is obviously the most likely place he will eventually end up for various different reasons. The WWF is the biggest wrestling promotion in the world and has the means to offer Goldberg an extremely lucrative contract. They also have the marketing muscle and experience to really push Goldberg and give him the attention he wants. Going to the WWF would also create a major short-term business boom with potentially huge money making matches in Austin/Goldberg, Triple H/Goldberg, Rock/Goldberg, Hogan/Goldberg, etc. Whether the WWF can generate long-term business growth off of Goldberg is another question.
However, the most interesting dynamic of this entire situation is the fact that the WWF is not the only game in town even though it often seems like that. Obviously the WWF is dominating the industry right now but there are many promotions, 3 in particular, that are trying to establish themselves as a legitimate #2 in terms of national wrestling. Those 3 promotions being the NWA, WWA, and XWF.
The WWA, even though they focus much of their business on areas outside of the US, continue to try and establish themselves as a viable option on US PPV. The XWF has been struggling recently but, depending on who you believe, are closer than ever to reaching a TV deal. The NWA will start a weekly PPV series in June.
Signing Goldberg would be big for any of the above mentioned promotions and if one of those 3 can land him, they could take a serious step forward in the race for a viable #2 promotion. The NWA is taking a huge gamble with their weekly PPV series but, at the same time, have a big company in iN DEMAND backing them up, and they are sure to get a lot of mainstream publicity and exposure due to the innovative nature of a weekly PPV series. Signing Goldberg would be huge for them for obvious reasons. The main question with the "underdog" promotions in the war for Goldberg has to be whether they have the money to sign Goldberg. The WWF does and they probably won't have much of a problem beating any of those promotions in a bidding war. However, money isn't the only thing. Goldberg would become the center focus and main building block if he signed with the NWA, XWF, or WWA and that is incentive in itself.
Dave Meltzer is also reporting that New Japan and Pride are also interesting in signing Goldberg. New Japan is a major force overseas but you have to wonder if Goldberg is willing to give up life in the US for a career in Japan. New Japan and/or Pride may be something Goldberg looks at now, but I don't see him going to either of them for any serious length of time.
I think the NWA really has the most to gain from signing Goldberg at this point. Signing Goldberg would really send a serious message to the wrestling world, its fans, and to the WWF. The NWA will need a major draw during its initial weeks if they want to draw good numbers. Delivering Goldberg's return to wrestling could give them the attention they need in the short-run, and then it would be up to the quality of their product as a whole to try and maintain success in the long-run.
Despite being out of wrestling for awhile, Goldberg has done a good job staying in the public eye and making mainstream appearances. He is still a very well known name and his free agency really has the potential to shake the foundation of wrestling, depending on who he signs with.
Keep in mind that Goldberg is injured right now but should be ready to go soon enough. His current arm injury isn't anything that will keep him out of action for a long period of time.
So yeah, before celebrating, let's first wait until he REALLY signs with the WWF. |
