i just searched for 'avatar size limits' and found this :

1. Dimension Limitations: The old limitation was 150x150, but that has since been increased to 150x250. We cannot push the WIDTH (150) limitation anymore due to the fact that it would hurt the layout of the forums. This gives people more space to work, but on the other hand, gives people to ability to take advantage of the file size limitation, on that note however..

2. File Size Limitations: The current file size limitation has not changed, and it will remain 250000 bytes, which is around 244.14kb, which is incredibly large by anyone's standards. This may change to a lower number in the future, but in the meantime we will leave it where it is now. If we decide to change, this post will update.
