 Turkey agrees to total ban on the death penalty | |
The Turkish government has agreed to a total ban on the death penalty, in an effort to increase its chances of EU membership.
Its envoy to the Council of Europe signed a European Convention protocol abolishing the death penalty in all circumstances, including during wars. The European Commission says the move is a 'significant step on its way to becoming a fully-fledged democracy'. |
