BBC1 has axed struggling reality TV talent show Fame Academy.

Flagging ratings and strong competition from ITV1 rival Pop Idol are blamed for the show's demise, according to the Daily Star.

The Saturday night program has fewer than five million viewers and BBC insiders have admitted it was a mistake to try and compete with Pop Idol.

The show, with big-name presenters Cat Deeley and Patrick Kielty, sees pop hopefuls sharing a house and trying to get their big break.

It was dumped just days after doubling its audience following rescheduling to accomodate last Saturday's England/Macedonia clash.

BBC1 will complete showing this series but there will not be another run of the show.

Despite weak ratings in the first series, the Beeb decided to give the show another chance following the success of Celebrity Fame Academy.

The format has also proved a huge success in France, but has flopped in Germany.
