THERE was a time when club promoters would kill to get Britney Spears into their VIP area.
But when she behaves like a diva these days, they can't get rid of her fast enough.
The fallen pop princess's latest humiliation occurred when she was shown the door in an LA nightspot for defying their smoking ban.
In scenes that suggested the 21-year-old is doing everything in her power to single-handedly trash her career, she was removed from fashionable Hollywood club Joseph's after a furious bust-up with management.
The row erupted after she and two gal pals were shown to the best seats in the house. Blonde Britney promptly lit up a fag even though she was in a no-smoking zone.
When a club security officer asked her to stub it out, he was told by Britney's bodyguard that as she was such a big name, the rules didn't apply to her. But club bosses had other ideas and told her to sling her hook.
A club insider who witnessed the whole incident reveals: "A year ago Britney was untouchable and no one would have dared tell her what to do. But things are different now. She had it all but she's throwing it all away. The whole thing was embarrassing.
"She thinks that, because she's Britney Spears, she can smoke if she wants to - but not any more. Those days are over."
The star's latest humiliation came shortly after she was publicly disgraced by Fred Durst when he told the world they had had unprotected sex.
And she's also had to endure seeing her ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake groping Kylie Minogue's bum at the Brits.
The troubled singer has now fled to her family home in Louisiana on strict instructions from friends and family who are worried that she's partying too hard.
They believe she needs some time out of the showbiz spotlight so she can get her career and her life back on track.
Her mother in particular has told her to cut back the partying and concentrate on her new album.
And just days after the Joseph's debacle, Limp Bizkit star Durst confirmed their fears by saying: "She parties too much. I didn't see her do coke but she drinks and smokes so much. She needs to make some right decisions in her life."
