Default Top 10 movies of 2002

'Gangs of New York', 'About a Boy' and 'Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers' have made the American Film Institute's list of 10 outstanding motion pictures for 2002.

Also named were, 'About Schmidt', 'Adaptation', 'Antwone Fisher', 'Chicago', 'Frida', 'The Hours' & 'The Quiet American'.

Martin Scorsese's 'Gangs Of New York' was described as "bravura filmmaking by an American master".

'The Two Towers' was described as "an epic screen experience that will inspire awe in generations of movie lovers for years to come"

The jury described Hugh Grant comedy 'About A Boy' as "a tonic for what ails us". They said Jack Nicholson's 'About Schmidt' "puts a new face on film satire".

The jury chose sales of DVD over VHS as an "AFI moment of significance", also citing the success of surprise hit 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding', and the launch of movielink.com for on-demand online distribution of films. The AFI also honoured the late writer/director/producer Billy Wilder.

An official awards ceremony will take place on 16 December 2003 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles.
