I have actually had THE EXACT SAME THING happen with my mouse before!!! And, folks, this is NOT a cleaning-your-mouse issue,.....it is DEVICE DRIVER CONFLICT!!!

The mouse driver(s) you have, for some reason, don't exactly work like they should. You should try to uninstall those and reinstall the ones Windows comes with, and just deal without the added functionality (Yes, you will have to do this with the keyboard, seeing as how you cannot use your mouse. General things to know are that Tab is good at switching between items/fields, usually hold Alt and press the key of things which are underlined to select them.

You will need to uninstall a lot of things through the control panel Add-Remove programs dialog box.
