This is one of my all-time favorite shows...when it first aired I was 15, just like the protagonist (Angela)...I was instantly hooked...every episode was like a perfectly wrapped gift...it had intelligent dialogue which didn't underestimate the audience, somewhat fleshed out characters, and it didn't shy away from dealing with serious and controversial subject matters...there has never been another show that has adequately tapped into the angst of what it means to be a teen...
I was initially bummed that the show only aired for one season (I heard that it was because Claire Danes wanted to persue a career in movies)...but now I'm quite glad that it went out in its prime...it certainly left a lasting impression...
btw...I don't think Ricky was a "token" anything...his character was just as vital as anyone else's on the show and they actually gave him a storyline and a history and he wasn't just an ambiguous (and sexless) sidekick, unlike shows like Dawson's Creek, which is a good example of tokenism (in terms of the gay character)...
