Default Spring Break Turns Deadly In Panama City Beach

Panama City Beach Police Officer Killed

Panama City Beach police are investigating the shooting death of an officer, Sgt. Kevin Kight. A suspect is in jail after a nightlong search.

It happened around 10:30 p.m. Sunday at the corner of Beckrich Road and Front Beach Road in the Edgewater section of Panama City Beach. The shooting reportedly happened during a routine traffic stop.

A witness tells Newschannel 7 he heard four gun shots in the area of the Holiday Inn Sunspree in Panama City Beach.

Police have arrested 22-year-old Robert J. "Saint" Bailey, who they believe was the gunman. He was found hiding around 7:30 Monday morning in an abandoned house near the Sugar Sands Motel on the west end of the beach.

Bailey and two other men are believed to have hijacked at least one vehicle after the shooting.

Bay County sheriff's deputies brought two men in for questioning, who are described as "associates" of the alleged gunman. The two were picked up at a motel in the Laguna Beach area.

The suspect was quoted to have said to his friends at the time they were pulled over, "I'm not going back to prison, even if I have to pop this cop." The suspect thought the police officer knew he violated his parole and is why he was pulled over. This afternoon, the suspect said he was sorry and was drunk, and asked how Kight was doing.

Kight was a six-year veteran of the beach police. He leaves behind a wife and a four-year-old son.

There will be more details on this story throughout the day on NewsChannel 7.
