There are several reasons why that method is neither better nor faster.
It smears roach guts all over your shoe, assuming you even hit it, which, the roach will probably live and get away even if you DO hit it...they are quite hardy and very fast! Plus, even IF you can somehow kill the roach with your shoe, your shoe will smell ever so nasty as will wherever the spot was that the roach was when you smashed him---how will you clean that?
My method only makes the container you use smell nasty and nothing else
If you have encountered roaches but never the roach smell then either one of two things
1: The roaches you have there are of a different variety than the ones here. The ones here DO smell and VERY BAD and it is quite strong but they only start to really smelling bad once you kill them. Also, in this case, I am assuming the roaches you have are slow enough you can actually hit them with a shoe and also weaker than the roaches here, since one hard smack apparently kills the ones there (it takes at least a few hard smacks to do any sort of damage to the ones here)
2: Your sense of smell is desensitized to the roach smell and/or your sense of smell is not so good. Also, in this case, I am assuming you have faster reflexes than I do and stronger hits on the roach on initial hit than I do. I've got excellent reflexes, so if yours are faster, that's amazing!
I'm leaning towards # 1
