A series of films based on books by the children's author Judy Blume are to be turned into Disney movies
Blume, whose best-sellers include Are You There God?, It's Me Margaret and Forever, signed the multi-picture deal with her son Lawrence, a film-maker.
Blume's books for teenagers have sold over 75m copies around the world and been translated into 26 languages.
The first book to be adapted will be Deenie, about a teenage girl's struggle against her parents' choices for her.
The deal marks the second high-profile series of books Disney has signed up in the past fortnight, having recently bought the rights to CS Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia.
"The name Judy Blume is synonymous with great young adult literature," said Nina Jacobson, president of Disney's Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group.
"Everyone discovers her books in fifth grade and grows up with her - she strikes a chord with humour and heart while never preaching." |
