This place is dead, let's post a thread | | Yeah so with the WWE on TV, we're all used to watching shows like RAW and SmackDown, you could pretty much say that being the only competitors atm, those shows automatically steal the crown. It's pretty much the only thing we got, whether we like it or not.
I really miss the commotion back when WCW was still a promotion, so I went and took one of my tapes and put on one of their last PPV's just to see and remember what it was like back in those days.
For the first time I felt a little weird when watching that back and such, being used to the WWE right now, there's just so much difference, both good and bad pretty much. So I thought hell, let's make a list. Stuff that I really noticed in terms of differences between companies of which one today does not exist:
-- the arena seemed smaller
-- the ring seemed smaller
-- this I already knew, but the ring ropes in the WCW were a lot stronger, and worked less with guys leaning in them
-- no scripted wrestling, everything was improvised, that is very clear now when I watch it back
-- Goldberg's neck muscles were much bigger
-- Lex Luger
-- Goldberg gets suplexed and gets up right away, standing on his feet before the opponent gets back up from doing the move
-- Kevin Nash actually wrestles
-- DDP is a face and everyone chants his name
-- Mark Madden, Tony Shiavone
-- ^ announcers actually call moves by name
-- ^ first time in a long time I hear an announcer say "discus lariat - drop toehold - missile dropkick (instead of 'dropkick from the top rope') - headscissor takedown - superplex (instead of 'suplex from the top rope') - etc etc etc
-- Scott Steiner is at his best, and is being very smart in the ring
-- Booker T is a more serious wrestler
-- Booker T uses a chair and every one is surprised including his brother Stevie Ray
-- The real WCW World Title belt (what WWE uses is a fake version)
-- Chuck Palumbo and Shawn Stasiak are tag team Champions
-- Mark Madden calls Palumbo an all American (*has FBI moment*)
-- Ric Flair is CEO
-- Rey Mysterio doesn't wear a mask
-- Diamond Cutter and Jacknife Powerbomb at the exact same time in the ring
-- Kevin Nash with the tag team gold *memories*
-- small rampway
-- chairshot to the head doesn't make them bleed
-- Hell in a cell cage is used, but match is referred to as a normal cage match
-- Midajah (not that I really liked her looks but she carried the lead pipe!)
-- the lead pipe
-- Steiner wins the World Heavyweight gold
-- Instead of celebrating his win, he takes a chair and beats up Booker T some more
-- Steiner whacks a referee over the head with a chair
-- Booker T does a spinarooni after he did the axe kick to get back up on his feet without announcing it
-- Booker T is on his feet before Steiner recovers from the axe kick
-- Booker T puts Steiner in a straight-jacket
-- Steiner rips the straight-jacket to pieces
-- Steiner does a Steiner Recliner with the lead pipe instead of his arms
-- Goldberg does less looking around and is more focussed in the ring
-- ^ He doesn't screw up his moves either
-- ^ His entrance is classic
-- Less annoying sign boards everywhere
-- The crowd is very different
-- The sound isn't as good
-- Less pyro, less show stuff
-- Very different camera work: more boring, but better done - every move is perfectly brought onto the screen
-- The announcers table stayed intact
Ah, it's just so different. One big positive is that even though I've seen all these matches on my tape before, the moves done are still unpredictable. They really do nothing other than improvising in the ring. That's real professional wrestling. As Kevin Nash once said, you go in there with a blank mind, you got like 18 minutes, go fill them. And do it right.
The WWE should start doing that. Oh that would make them so much better. No more predictable moves, no more predictable matches.
Alright well, that was my "I miss my favorite wrestling show" rant, and added another thread to a dead place that really has too little traffic to even stay open any longer, heh.
But I'm not gonna pay for advertisement, oh no.. *runs away*
It's late, I'm tired, I hope this post even makes sense. heh |
